LOCAL PRODUCTION

Archeological studies show that there has been a settled life style and marine trade since the settlement started in the İzmir Peninsula. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, which is the only municipality in Turkey with an agricultural policy, enhances standards of local people with the local production projects being implemented under the administration of experts in the Peninsula Project and also provides more people to make use of region’s product riches.

“The Peninsula Project within the Scope of Supporting Income Generating Activities in the Rural Area”, prepared in collaboration with Ege University, Faculty of Agriculture, aims the below outcomes:

*To increase producers’ income levels and life conditions, and increase the young population through new employment areas,
*To extend and enhance new products and production systems,
*To ensure sustainability in agricultural production,
*To capitalize producer cooperatives,
*To educate, in order to transport healthy local products to consumers; especially the people of İzmir,
*To increase products’ added-value.

Local production projects are being implemented under three main titles:

*Agricultural education
*Projects for improving agriculture
*Projects for supporting stock farming

AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION AND PROJECTS FOR SUPPORTING STOCK FARMING

Kopanisti and sepet cheese

These two cheese types are sorts of cottage cheese being made from whey and produced from goat milk in Karaburun, Çeşme and Urla districts. We aim to boost the production of kopanisti and sepet cheeses in order to save local flavors and to taste products made in hygienic conditions; and we educate producers.

Honey and apiculture products
Karaburun and Urla have significance with regard to apiculture. We have initiated “The Project of Promoting The Production of Honey and Alternative Products in Peninsula Region within the scope of Supporting Income Generating Activities in the Rural Region” in order to extend production activity to the entire Peninsula and increase producers’ profitability. We have planned programs starting with education in Karaburun, Çeşme, Urla, Güzelbahçe, Menderes, Seferihisar and Selçuk districts and keep processing with the distributions of bees and equipments. It is aimed to pass to professional apiculture as a result of applied education. With an increase in honey, pollen, bee resin and royal jelly production, high income will be provided for producers and a healthy and qualified food production will be provided for consumers.

The attendance and full time residence in the Peninsula are the conditions required for participating in the education. If there are people who are already engaged in apiculture, it is also taken into consideration how many hives they have and for how many years they have been engaged in apiculture.

It is given priority to create women employment in the education. Bees and equipments were distributed to 15 producers; 4 of who are women in Mordoğan, 22 producers; 4 of who are women in Karaburun and 15 producers; one of who is woman in Urla. Each producer is provided with three hives, two of them are with bees, and one empty. The other production materials having been distributed are as follows:

4 propolis traps for each
1 non combustible mask and gloves for each
1 bellow for each
1 hive tool for each
1 honeycomb of 8 kilos for each
1 spool wire
1 brush for each
1 uncapping fork for each
2 queen excluder for each
2 cloak boards for each
12 hive frames with bees for each
24 empty hive frames for each

Furthermore, materials such as milking machines, nanokar cleaning sprays, oxalic acid dehydrates, milking tents; which are necessary for common usage, were bought; Urla, Mordoğan, Karaburun and Ege University, Faculty of Agriculture, Research and Application Station, was given each of these materials. The producers signed a contract that they will protect the honey production materials in a suitable place and make them ready for the time and place that the experts can check, record the field works, and share them with project managers and experts if needed, and that they will work for 24 months under the supervision of the Municipality and the University. Within the framework of the projects, 59 producers from Seferihisar, 100 from Menderes, and 10 from Selçuk have requested training from our Municipality. The planned dates for the training are December 2015 and January 2016.

Hair goat and Sakız sheep

In Karaburun and Mordoğan areas, goat breeding is carried out by manual feeding or not feeding at all, depending on the forage. Forages become scanty as they are also used in RES and for olives. Producers not having a suitable fold or shelter, also effect the production negatively. These conditions push the producers to decrease the number of animal in their herds, and even give up on this production line. Young people do not like this field. This production line is in danger of extinction if goat products do not sell for fair value.

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality developed a project to protect the existence of the local-gene source hair goats in the Peninsula, which are irreplaceable for the mild climate and ecosystem.

“Pure breeding and selection of hair goats” method has been adopted. It was decided that the lead farmers that would be chosen amongst the hair goat breeders will get notified. With the protocol signed between the Agricultural Faculty of Ege University and our Municipality, training sessions were given in April 2015 for sheep and goat pure breeding and selection, registration and its importance, and herd management in Karaburun (goat) and Urla (sheep). 17 breeders in Karaburun attended the training and 24 in Urla. Also, in Küçükbahçe Village of Karaburun, and in the Production Farm of the Agricultural Faculty of Ege University, applied trainings were given. 5 billy goats, 14 goats, 16 rams and 45 sheep were given to the producers that met the criteria.

Organic agriculture and agro tourism

According to this, 12 thousand tomato, 7500 chili pepper, 7500 sweet pepper, 17 thousand and 35 long eggplant and 16 thousand and 30 short eggplant seedlings (60,065 seedlings in total) were delivered to the producers.

In the second step of the notification meetings that we carried out in order to introduce the new vegetable kinds in the region, our producers have extended their demand to grow red lettuce and purple cauliflower in the winter. In line with this request, our Municipality handed out 162 thousand and 300 seedlings to the producers in Urla and Karaburun on September 18, 2015. In Karaburun, where the soil and the climate are suitable to grow red onion, the seeds for it were given away in October. In line with the cooperation protocol we signed, we are giving applied training for red onion growing to the producers in the Mordoğan research station of the Agricultural Faculty of Ege University.
